Alexa’s Graduation Gallery

Hi all,

Happily, the images showed up (below), and I continue my reign as Web Genius. Yay!

Gallery Instructions

After you select one of the thumbnail images below and want to view the next large image, just click your mouse anywhere inside the pic. The software control will auto-magically move to the next image. Now, if you want to go BACK one image, slide down to just underneath the photograph to find the navigation controls. Click Back or Next. I promise, this is as easy as it gets.

To get started, slide down below these words and click on one of the thumbnails. Then, get ready to enjoy the photos!

Why I do it

For those of you who do NOT know who I am or why I do this photography thing; it is because I love taking pictures of people. Faces, complete with all their bumps, crevices, and lines remind me of life itself. Its landscape is a reminder of the life we have all lived up until the moment the picture is captured. It fascinates me and should be a pleasant reminder to us all of the fantastic life we have enjoyed so far!

For you to have allowed me to freeze your image, to save your visage onto my camera, is both an honor and privilege for me. And for that, I thank you.

Fine Print

Not really fine print, per se, but here’s how you can leverage the power of pixels to your advantage.  The images in the gallery are posted at 800×600 pixels…..websites don’t work too well when there are lots of large files being accessed……and this will look great on the computer monitor, laptop, iPad, or cell phone you are viewing them on.  LOOKING at them is great!  Printing?  Not so much.  But, have no fear, I have also created the facility for you to receive the FULL SIZED 3 – 7 MB file, which is great for printing.

If you make a donation (click on the DONATE button) I’ll send you the photos you would like. Click the button to send ANY AMOUNT of cash-money my way. Your choice. A buck. Five. Ten. Whatever. Click the button. I use PayPal which is quick, easy, and free. Your donation will go to my Lens Fund. When it is full to the brim, I’ll upgrade my lens (yeah, in about ten years. The one I want is $1600). What do you think? Use one of your meat-digits to mash the DONATE button and lets get this party started!

Help me buy a new lens....or something!

I hope you enjoy the pix. It was fun to share the day with you!

PS this is a work in progress and I do all my photo work after dark. There are nearly 300 useable photos and they all need processing, which is time consuming. Visit again soon, there will be more!

The Pictures Just Keep Comin’

This is the view of Old Sacramento from the CalSTRS building…..15th floor! CalSTRS is the short version of California State Teachers Retirement System and the building is just two years old. As a matter of interest, I am told the building sways on a windy day. Now wouldn’t THAT be odd?!

Bridge Over Troubled Waters?

Sacramento's Tower Bridge

Tower Bridge spanning the Sacramento River

Definitely a bridge. Definitely over water. I’m not certain it is a bridge over “troubled” waters but hey, YOU try to write that phrase without singing at least PART of the Simon & Garfunkel song of the same name (for the young uns out there Simon & Garfunkel were a very talented song writing team during the ’70’s. After much drama they split. Check it out when you have some time.) inside your head.

This photo was taken with my Windows Phone 7 and I think it turned out really good. Nice job Samsung!

It is now March 22 and the river is really up.  We have been having lots of rain in the valley and even more snow up in the mountains.  Since it is March and Spring has just sprung, the weather will be getting warm pretty soon.  This means, the already full reservoirs will be filling with new runoff and our current def-con 4 situation will be getting an adjustment to a 5.  Hopefully our levees will hold and keep the water where it belongs…..which is inside the levees!

Gargantuan 8.9m Earthquake in Japan

I’ll let a couple of news stories tell the story.

How it happened
from Live Science

The Japanese earthquake ruptured near the boundary between the Pacific and North American tectonic plates — huge, moving slabs of the Earth’s crust. The quake was a megathrust earthquake, where the Pacific plate dove underneath Japan at the Japan Trench. The seafloor was pushed away from Japan sending waves roaring toward Hawaii and the West Coast of the United States.

Title: Hundreds killed in tsunami after 8.9 Japan quake
Article by: MALCOLM FOSTER, Associated Press

TOKYO – A ferocious tsunami unleashed by Japan’s biggest recorded earthquake slammed into its eastern coast Friday, killing hundreds of people as it carried away ships, cars and homes, and triggered widespread fires that burned out of control.

Hours later, the waves washed ashore on Hawaii and the U.S. West coast, where evacuations were ordered from California to Washington but little damage was reported. The entire Pacific had been put on alert — including coastal areas of South America, Canada and Alaska — but waves were not as bad as expected.

In northeastern Japan, the area around a nuclear power plant was evacuated after the reactor’s cooling system failed and pressure began building inside.

Police said 200 to 300 bodies were found in the northeastern coastal city of Sendai, the city in Miyagi prefecture, or state, closest to the epicenter. Another 178 were confirmed killed, with 584 missing. Police also said 947 people were injured.

The magnitude-8.9 offshore quake triggered a 23-foot (seven-meter) tsunami and was followed for hours by more than 50 aftershocks, many of them more than magnitude 6.0. In the early hours of Saturday, a magnitude-6.6 earthquake struck the central, mountainous part of the country — far from the original quake’s epicenter. It was not immediately clear if this latest quake was related to the others

Friday’s massive quake shook dozens of cities and villages along a 1,300-mile (2,100-kilometer) stretch of coast, including Tokyo, hundreds of miles (kilometers) from the epicenter. A large section of Kesennuma, a town of 70,000 people in Miyagi, burned furiously into the night with no apparent hope of being extinguished, public broadcaster NHK said

And From MSNBC:

The tsunami, spawned by an 8.9-magnitude earthquake in Japan, slammed the eastern coast of Japan, sweeping away boats, cars, homes and people as widespread fires burned out of control. It raced across the Pacific at 500 mph — as fast as a jetliner — before hitting Hawaii and the West Coast.

Dozens of boats were damaged as surging water knocked them from their docks, both in Crescent City and on California’s central coast in Santa Cruz, where loose fishing boats crashed into one another and chunks of wooden docks broke off.

New Favorite Commercial: Jennifer Aniston Sex Tape

Now wait a second, don’t get all offended with the title of my post. This is actually a commercial for SmartWater and the company is calling it the Jennifer Aniston Sex Tape.

The ad starts oddly with a little kid lip-synching some song. If I were cool enough, I would know the name of the “song”….but I’m not, so there’s that. The video then moves on to the warm and fuzzy part showing a whole bunch of puppies. Cute! Then, inappropriate dancing babies….well, you’ll just need to see it to believe it. The best part might be when some Jen Aniston fan-boy gets kicked in his package – which is supposed to add “about a hundred thousand hits”. The Big Finale has Jen drinking from a bottle of SmartWater in slow motion which is a great ending, and a total crack up!

Oh, and the whole premise of the ad is; lets get a whole bunch of people to view the video and have it go “viral”, thus the caption “Jen Aniston sex tape”.

It’s kind of a great way for a company to get noticed; use famous person to feature product, use some great music (at the end of commercial, Gary Rafferty’s “Baker Street” plays), and get a serious number of eyeballs on the ad. I think this one might just work.

What do you think?

My Sister and I did this….

Back about a hundred years ago when dinosaures roamed the earth, my sister and I had a plastic sword battle. You know those little swords they use to hold sandwiches together? I stabbed her in the ear with one of those.

We were on the top bunk of the bunk bed when the sword fight broke out. We went back and forth for at least a couple of minutes and an errant swashbuckling moment later, she had a little sword sticking out her ear, blood streaming down her neck, and 110 decibals of OUCH emanating from her throat. We went to the hospital right after that to see what kind of damage there was and I was grounded for a month or more.

I saw the video below and just had to share it. I’m pretty sure I’m breaking some rule by posting the video but it was so funny to watch I couldn’t help it. Enjoy!

Jessie gets some sun

jessie, enjoying some time in the sun

Jessie, enjoying some time in the sun

It has been raining here.  A lot.  It seems like there is snow falling everywhere else in these United States, but here in Sacramento it just rains.  And that means our mostly-indoor cat, Jessie, can’t get out and stretch her legs.

Today was different though.  Instead of inches of rain, we had a sudden flurry of at least a foot of sun!  All day too.  And Jessie finally got an opportunity to go outside.  Hooray!

The photo you see is Jessie, relaxing inside the Raccoon fountain in the backyard, with only her head poking out….it made me smile.

Recipe: coffee/banana smoothie

I haven’t tried this recipe yet, but simply must…..

I love coffee.  Dark and rich, the flavor is unmistakable.  I love the smell of it brewing and I think I like the color too.  I have heard coffee has the ability to kill an appetite dead in its tracks.  This could be a perfect example of “better living through chemicals” with caffeine doing the heavy lifting, but that’s a beautiful thing too.

And bananas.  Who doesn’t like bananas?  Banana splits and banana shakes.  Bananas on your morning cereal.  Natures perfect fruit.  A banana will also help assuage hunger with its 3 grams of fiber, and they are so easy to eat!

Combine the two using this recipe, and what do you have?  Perhaps it should be called: Magic in a Glass.

Try this:

Coffee and Banana Smoothie

Ingredients:
  • banana
  • 1 cup milk – low fat
  • 1/2 cup cold black coffee
  • 1/2 cup ice
Instructions:

Place banana, milk, coffee, and ice in a blender. Blend until smooth (sweeten as needed)

Enjoy!

Windows Phone 7

Here is a video I ran across in my recent travels and thought you might enjoy a little overview of Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7.  This was created by a guy with an idea to share.  He should win an award or something!
