Guns and Senators do not mix!

Leland Yee is one of the Senators gleefully passing (trying to pass) laws against gun owners. These are the kind of laws making it more difficult to obtain/use guns of any kind.  His political stance is anti-gun, his latest address: jail.

Last year his claim to fame was a law requiring all owners of long guns (rifles) of any kind to register them. Another Yee Bill, one that passed, is abolishing the use of magazines able to hold more than 10 rounds. And without getting into the whole pro-gun or anti-gun discussion, this sad story is about a guy standing up there saying “No You Can’t Have This” while having his palm greased (elections coming up) in the background by some very bad people he was helping to traffic firearms. Really? I hope they blow this guys career off the map!

Below is a copy of some of the text from the story going down since March 27, 2014. Yesterday.

SAN FRANCISCO/SACRAMENTO (Reuters) – A prominent California lawmaker was arrested on Wednesday in an FBI sweep that netted 26 people, a high-profile case that could affect statewide elections and brings to three the number of Democratic state senators who face criminal charges this year.
Senator Leland Yee, a former San Francisco supervisor and one-time mayoral candidate, was criminally charged in federal court in San Francisco with two felony counts of conspiring to import and traffic in firearms, and six corruption counts.

Yee was released on $500,000 bond and declined to comment on the case.

A criminal complaint posted online by the U.S. Attorney office for the Northern District of California alleges that Yee did favors for an undercover FBI agent in exchange for campaign contributions. The complaint alleges that Yee also offered to facilitate a meeting between the undercover agent and an arms dealer, and discussed the types of weapons that the undercover agent might need.

If one of our crime drama TV shows had a storyline like this, I don’t know if we would be glued to our seats or just shaking our head in disbelief.

WP8 Screenshots

Windows Phone 8 has native support for taking screenshots, and it couldn’t be easier to do. Here’s how to take screenshots on the smartphone and where to find them later.

All you have to do is to keep the power button pressed and then press the Windows symbol touch key on your phone.

Once that’s done, it’s easy to find the shots:

  • Go to Photos
  • Then Albums
  • And finally, Screenshots

Friday. Space Shuttle Day. Sacramento.

Space Shuttle Endeavor with follow

The Space Shuttle Endeavor with its follow-jet visiting Sacramento

Today was different.  Oh sure, it started out the same as any other Friday with a big smile and maybe a little dance, but there was a Space Shuttle coming my way and this was a bigger Friday than usual.

Yep, my Canon 7D was ready with a cleared off memory card and freshened batteries, and my eye was ready to see a special NASA space plane piggy-backing a ride atop a specially built 747 across the country.  Oh, and it was going to receive clear air over Sacramento and would be flying at 1,500′, which is REALLY low for a plane usually carrying a payload of nearly 500,000 pounds.

Space Shuttle Endeavor was launched out of Earths gravitational pull 25 times and helped build out the International Space Station twelve times.  It was a workhorse worthy of any accolades you can think or speak, and it was flying over Our Town USA!  Today’s journey would end in Los Angeles where it would ultimately transport to a museum for public viewing shackled to the ground like a prisoner.  As if gravity wasn’t enough to keep it Earth-bound, its’ engines were decommissioned too.  Such is the life of our iron-heros!  Today was a day for NASA to show-off a little and do one last song-and-dance for the people.

One of those people was ME, and I took some photos.  One of them made the final cut and was worthy of sharing….with YOU.

Migrate much?

OK, something I just found out is really irritating me. Lucky you to have stopped by!

It is well-known Microsoft and Nokia have teamed up to deploy their vision of smartphones on to the world.  Excellent, I love both companies and wish them well!  To take it a step further, I will be buying the Nokia Lumia 920 when they finally release it to the public.  Can’t wait!

I have supported Windows Phone since they came out.  The planets aligned perfectly, and when my two year contract with AT&T expired Windows Phone 7 was just being released.  I went for it, loved it WAY MORE than my previous phone (iPhone 3GS), and have been waiting for the apps to get really good ever since.  That’s been a wait….for sure….but the phone works really well.  Kudos to Samsung for that.

But my success often comes when others struggle, so I started thinking about WHY the Windows Phone hasn’t taken off.  First, I fully realize some people are just happy with what they’ve got.  If there’s no reason to change, why change?  That’s people exercising their rights as individuals.  It’s comfortable to stay the same, why change?  And second, change can be scary.  Confusing even.  I don’t know HOW to do this, so I don’t.  I’d like to upgrade but I don’t know how.

My wife tells me she is “bored” with her iPhone, and you know what?  I totally get it.  That made me ask “Why don’t you switch?”  Her answer, “I don’t want to lose my texts or contacts.”

And I couldn’t really help.  Oh sure, I can totally rip into iTunes on her laptop and extract pictures, videos, and music.  That’s easy.  It’s the txts and apps….what about the apps?  Bother.

And then I found a site called markspace.com.  They have a software solution for that exact problem.  It is called “Welcome Home to Windows Phone” and the software is free for Nokia customers!  And, it works on PC or Mac.  AND, it matches up your existing apps with a comparable Windows Phone apps.

Check it out!

Skype and Windows Phone 8!

In my last post, I totally forgot to mention SKYPE for Windows.  You see, Microsoft bought Skype last year and has been thwarted with their updates because of pre-existing spaghetti code (code pieced together to satisfy a need, and another need, and so on making it unruly).  I’m thinking they said “heck, we’re updating to Windows 8, let’s make it compliant with that release.”

Well, it is now THAT TIME.  Windows 8 has gone final and they have been working on Skype too.  Will it go final soon?  I don’t know, BUT they released Skype for Windows, beta 5.11 and that is really good news for you fans of Skype!  Read about it at Microsoft’s News site

What does that mean to me?  Personally? (I know you want to know) It means my next phone, the Nokia Lumia 920, will have a native client on-board and complete access to the Skype universe.  The code will be baked into the phone’s OS.  I’ll get notified when a Skype caller attempts to reach me and be able to make a Skype call as easily as dialing a phone number.  When I click on Contacts, in addition to sending a message, typing an email, or shooting my latest photograph off to my Live account, there will be a Skype selection as well.  Click to initiate a call.

Phone to phone video Skype-ing?  With the front facing 720p camera of my new Lumia 920, you bet!  Phone to laptop/desktop too.

Great news Microsoft, keep it coming!

New Toy! The iPhone 5

Well, Apple did it again.  They released a minor update to their phone and are going to extract a lot of money out of a lot of pockets.  Last time, they did this it was from their version 4 to 4S.  Now it’s the 4S to the 5.  If you know me, I am not an Apple fan-boy.  I appreciate their tech but don’t understand the sheep-like mentality of their customers.  They will seemingly purchase anything Apple releases!

Here is a funny thing, nay, an ironic thing: do you recall Apple’s best-commercial-of-all-time?  It was shown during the 3rd quarter of the Super Bowl back in January 1984.  Its purpose was to introduce the new Macintosh computer.  It was directed by Ridley Scott and has a lady running down the aisle during a meeting(?) with a sledgehammer in her hand.  She launched that hammer and shattered the screen as a way to tell viewers that Apple was saving humanity from “conformity”.  Railing against doing a thing  just because everyone else is doing it.  Kinda like the iSheep filling up their cars with gas for the trip to the phone store to pick up their new iPhone 5…..because Apple told them to.  If you haven’t seen the commercial, it is awesome and you can check it out on YouTube via this link: Apple Commercial.  The irony of then/now is not lost on this writer!

Oh, and if you are a long time shareholder of Apple stock; congratulations, you have made a LOT of money!

The new phone is out.  Last time I thought to myself “this is a minor upgrade!”, this time I’m saying something about it.  Right here, right now.  Got a minute or three?  Read on!

A Little History

Apple’s first phone, the iPhone 2G, was released in June 2007.  It was a seismic shift in the cellular landscape as its’ look and feel was unlike anything anyone had ever seen.  A 3.5″ touchscreen and apps.  It was the first time this kind of magic would be released for public consumption and needless to say, it caused quite a rumble.  Fresh and oh so new!

Their next offering was the iPhone 3G.  The offering was released to the public in July 2008 and was a nice update to the 2G.  It maintained the look and feel, stayed with the 3.5″ screen, and leveraged music, movies, and photos like no other phone available.  More and more folks were seeing the value of holding a little computer in their hands and the upgrades from feature phone to this new “smartphone” tech was getting serious!  Since it advanced the already successful previous phone, people were very excited about it.

Then came the iPhone 3GS.  This one was a worldwide hit before it was released in October 2009!  First off, it fixed a myriad of problems the first two phones had and further advanced the device technology.  Again with the 3.5″ screen, and you could have any color you wanted as long as it was black.  At that time, the app store was being fully deployed and higher speed downloads were possible as the phone companies had been busily upgrading their services for the past 3 years.  The fixes were significant and with the apps becoming more and more useful, Apple had a true winner.

And then they released version 4 of the iPhone family.  This device hit the streets June, 2010 to great anticipation.  The 3.5″ screen was a design characteristic Apple stayed with for this upgrade, so it was really just a frame update you were receiving – a minor upgrade.  Everything else stayed the same.  So, you just picked up your 3GS in October and here you are standing in line in June, just 8 months later, about to drop six or seven hundred bucks on the next upgrade cuz by golly you are an Apple-fan and they can do no wrong.  And how do you feel when you put this beauty in your hands?  Fantastic?  You should, it’s the newest and best phone EVER if you were to pay attention to the adverts.  Then you tried to use it.  Anyone remember antennae-gate?  The iPhone 4 had an uninsulated stainless steel frame and dropped calls like they were hot potatoes.  The form factor was fantastic, the software very capable, but the phone call part of the equation?  Not so much.  Your phone, with its computing power could now launch the Space Shuttle if NASA had released an app for it, couldn’t stay attached to the cell tower.  Your HAND WAS IN THE WAY.  They released a How To Make a Call instruction-set to show where your hand should be placed and also made bumpers (gave them away for free) to insulate the phone from your hand.   From a technology standpoint, this one was a minor update and should be classified as a turd.

So Apple released the 4S.  With this release in October 2011, they fixed the antennae and upgraded the internal workings of the phone.  Situation normal there.  I think the “S” stood for Siri because this was the big upgrade the 4S is famous for.  Voice activated and oh-so-smart, Siri would take care of everything and anything.  Up until you forgot about Siri and went about your business as usual.  The touch-screen was responsive and the pixels per inch were off the charts!  It was gorgeous to look at and very smooth to operate.  Oh, and it could initiate and receive phone calls!  Yay.  Thankfully, with its 3.5″ screen, and more powerful than ever CPU, this minor update felt like a really good phone.  Worth the upgrade?  That is questionable.

Now, Apple is getting ready to release the iPhone 5.  This should be a BIG deal.  This should be a technolgic marvel.  This should be the ultimate cellphone.  Faster, smoother, better than ever.  Except it’s not.  They chose to add one half of a vertical inch to the screen to apparently increase the number of app icons the phone can show, but kept the width the same.  The camera is similar to the previous release, the processor speed is a bit faster, and the pixels per inch carry forward the spec from the previous phone.

My Gripe with Apple

Apple just announced their latest hardware, the iPhone 5.  Similar to the iPhone 4, they tweaked their previous model 3GS to come to terms with their “must-include” list of gear.  I “get it” that they don’t want, perhaps shouldn’t want to mess with a good (really good) design.  But little tiny updates don’t keep a company ahead of the curve.  Nokia just announced their upcoming Lumia 920 which kicks butt on this this latest slab-of-magic from Apple, and I don’t understand how that could happen!  Nokia, King of feature phones on planet Earth and late to the smart phone game, is releasing a better phone than Apple?  Wow, there’s a change.

So the included specs for the new Apple model#5 are finally including a larger than 3.5″ screen.  To me, that has always been a knock on their design.  I’ve got large hands and the iPhone never felt like anything but a toy, albeit a really smart toy.  I couldn’t read the font on the screen very well, couldn’t type on the keyboard….at all, and really never felt like I was going to do anything but drop it before I was finished using it.  So, HOORAY!  They finally made the screen 4 inches tall.  And they made it really thin too! Sadly, they chose to keep the screen the same 3″ width, so you now have an iPhone that is tall and skinny.

There is a problem with tall and skinny though.  Wanna watch music videos or film clips?  Say Hello to letter-boxing….yay <-sarcasm there.  I am NOT a fan of letter boxing and I have to ask “Hey Apple, what’s with the letter boxing?”  Really?  Odd decision, that.

From theverge – “And yes, it has a 4-inch display! The new screen resolution is the oft-rumored 1136 x 640, meaning the display of the iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4 and 4S has simply been elongated, both physically and in terms of pixel rows.”

Gleaned from the presentation by Phil Schiller (Senior VP at Apple), “you see, we’re able to add a fifth row of icons.  All of Apple’s own software has been updated for the new resolution and screen size, while third-party apps will be letter-boxed where necessary.”  Letter-boxing for apps?  Yes.  Letter boxing for apps AND video?  Ouch.  Didn’t see THAT coming.

Also, from another techie site gottabemobile, “Apple failed to introduce any killer features that put it ahead of the competition in terms of hardware. Sure, thin is nice, but there aren’t any real differentiators that its Android and Windows Phone competitors don’t have.”  The article goes on to indict Apple for not including several features which include: wireless charging, a best-in-class camera, near field communication (NFC), better battery life, and better Siri.

Here are two of those items above which made me wonder about their thinking:

  • Apple claims the new phones’ battery will last slightly longer than its predecessor on a single charge.  And in striving toward thinnest (it’s not) and lightest (nope) they decided to make the battery thin and light too.  And I’m here to tell you, the darn battery barely makes it through the day as it is!  Add LTE reception to the equation – which burns up a battery quicker than a 3G signal – and my guess is, reality may be different than the hopes of the Apple brain-trust.  The article from gottabemobile ends the paragraph with “Thinness doesn’t matter if your iPhone is dead.”
  • The other item which makes me believe Apple is really only presenting the iPhone 4.5S is the camera.  Nokia just announced their upcoming Lumia 920.  Inside that beauty is a lens with an f-stop of 2.0 (allows more light inside for processing) increasing the possibility of getting better night shots, which is SIGNIFICANTLY better than the f2.4 lens in the new iPhone.  Apple chose to release an insignificant upgrade of their camera, not a better camera as hoped for.  This model 5 is not a new re-imagined phone.  Just re-hashed hardware they had success selling for the past two years.  They really need to update their hardware BEFORE everyone else does.  They made their BILLIONS selling cutting edge hardware, now they seem to be playing catch-up with an old design.  Too bad.

I guess I’ll end with an off angled tip-of-the-hat to Apple.  I mean, congratulations for FINALLY realizing people want a larger phone screen.  Although I must say, shame on you for not keeping the appropriate 6:9 ratio.  Letter-boxing?  Really?  FAIL.

My next phone won’t be an iToy

I’m here to tell you, as customers interested in a new cell phone, you and I have a lot of device choices.  Apple, Android (Google), and Windows make the operating systems (OS) inside the phone most of  you crave. The manufacturers all pay good money – per device – to the creators of the OS you crave to put together your smartphone.  Parts and pieces are made by all sorts of disparate companies and the manufacturers put the pieces together, tighten up the screws, and send them away in a box for your consumption.

If you are an Apple-head with lots of iToys around, you have a lot of machines that are able to “talk” to each other.  Do a thing here on this thing, it becomes available there on that thing. Android, by Google, is a beast unto itself.  I could go on about how you are reduced to a “data stream” if you are connected via Android, but I won’t go into that here.  I don’t like Android and have none of their devices.  Now, if you already have a PC or laptop running Windows, you are best served by a Windows phone.

Wait….what?  A Windows Phone?  Yes, Windows Phone v8.  And my next cell phone?  The Nokia Lumia 920.

My Next: the Nokia Lumia 920

My eyeballs need a large screen.  The Nokia Lumia 920 has a 4.5″ screen serving up an industry best pixel density 332 ppi (pixels per inch).  With some pure Nokia Magic, the screen is VIEWABLE IN DIRECT SUNLIGHT.  Forwarding the technology from their Lumia 900, you really must see it to believe it!

My fingers don’t type too good either.  Hunt and Poke, that’s me!  With the larger screen on the Lumia 920 the keyboard increases in size, and there you go; easier typing!

As I am a bit of a photographer, I love to shoot photos.  My Canon 7D takes some incredible shots and it is always frustrating to be stranded in a picture-taking moment without it.  That is about to change though as the Lumia 920 has a pretty incredible shooter inside.  Sporting a Carl Zeiss f2.0 lens it will take a full 8.7 megapixel shot then process it with a magic potion of software Nokia calls “PureView”.  The full res shots will sport a large photograph that is 3264×2448, which is more than enough to create some breathtaking shots to remember.

As a side note: I learned about computers on a PC.  In spite of the Apple ads telling me I am a dork, I make my living using PC’s.  Since the desktop I use and the four laptops in my house are all based on Windows, I am very good with the platform.  Adding a Windows Phone two years ago to my stable of machines was a really good thing as I am able to easily share amongst them.  With the new Windows 8 upgrade and adding a Windows Phone 8 to the mix I will be able to do something here and have it show up there….wherever that may be.  Shoot a photo with my phone, it’ll show up on my laptop.  Work up a document on my desktop, it will become available on my laptop or phone.  In synch, always.  Yay!

There are lots of other features to crow about on the new Lumia 920: wireless charging, Near Field Communication (NFC), Bluetooth connection/transfer to name a few.  It’s a real advancement to the Windows Experience!

Sure, there’s ONLY 100,000 apps, but I have never wondered what to do with additional 400,00 apps.  I only use about 12 of them as is!

Want to see the specifications for this phone?  Go to the Nokia site: http://www.nokia.com/global/products/phone/lumia920/specifications/

Nokia will release the Lumia 920 on or about November 2, right after Windows releases the new Windows 8 OS.

Conclusion

Per usual, I went a little long on this missive.  After a couple of drafts and more than a few re-reads, I decided to stop here.  Oh sure, I could go on….but I won’t.  My point (and I DO have one), the one I have been trying to make is this: Apple has saturated the Market with some pretty good gear.  And perhaps they don’t know it yet, but they have just been passed up by many different manufacturers.  The Wow Factor in their newest cell phone release is gone.  It’s just more of the same.  The latest attempt is nothing short of a shrug of the shoulders.  Can everyone just say “meh” and move along?

Embrace a change, try something different!

Nokia Lumia 920 – my next phone

Nokia and Microsoft have finally announced their new phone, the Lumia 920.  It is running Windows Phone 8, which synchronizes with all your computing needs as quickly and easily as it is to login to your Live Account, and it is almost here!  Check out this link to Nokia.

Wireless charging?  Yep.  Anti-shake technology baked into the camera?  Check.  Screenshots?  Finally!  And all sorts of other magic….coming soon!

From Engadget, here is a little info about the specs:

As one of the first Windows Phone 8 devices to be officially announced, this device augments Espoo’s line with a larger, curved 4.5-inch PureMotion HD+ display, dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 CPU, 2,000mAh battery, NFC, integrated wireless charging and an 8-megapixel rear PureView camera capable of 1080p video. The display packs WXGA (1,280 x 768) resolution, is 25 percent brighter than the next best panel on the market and it’s the fastest LCD that Nokia has ever shipped on a smartphone. What’s more, the screen also boasts what Nokia calls “Super Sensitive Touch,” which promises to let you use it even when wearing gloves or mitts.

Did you catch that?  A 4.5″ HD display, dual-core SnapDragon CPU, and a Synaptics touchscreen fully functional even with gloves on.  This is great news for the Techies (good specs) and even better news for Joe and Josephine SixPack (great function) who will be living with the phone and its capabilities.

In a past life…

Once upon a time in a forgotten land I was not a cycling-crazed computer geek.  I know this seems strange, but there you go, facts is facts.  Instead, I was a Black Angus foodserver and bartender slewing food and drink to customers visiting the Citrus Heights store.  It was a fun and well-paying job back then where I met lots of people and moved really fast.  I also served some of my high school buddies and one of them left me a tip which included this $5 bill folded with some kind of magic origami voodoo.

Now, keeping in mind this all happened back in the late-70’s, and most of my memories have been seriously clouded with more than 30 years time, it was quite the surprise to locate this tip.  Then, I also recall the customer.  By name!  You see, he was one of my high school buddies.  We were in band together (he on saxaphone, me on trumpet) and we drove our Datsun 510’s all over town at high rates of speed.  We went to Don’s Burgers located close to the corner of Marconi/Eastern all the time and had an interest in the great cyclist, Eddie Merckx.

This mystery guy and I were great friends and when he came to visit me at Black Angus would always make me smile, and would always leave an over-sized tip (which coincidentally always made me smile).  The last time he visited one of my tables at the restaurant he left me the usual too-nice tip along with the folded up Five Dollar bill shown below.  It was never spent, never unfolded, and never thought of again after that night.  Instead, it went inside a box-of-memories and stayed right there until last night.

Last night, with a great sense of wonderment, I opened up a box, and like those Russian Nesting Dolls, located another box with my box-o-memories inside.  I just about crapped my pants when it opened up and found that folded up five dollar bill!  Along with it came the memory of serving my friend and his date a nice dinner, some cocktails, and dessert.  The tip that night was awesome but the thing I remember best was that folded up fiver.

So now I want to get a shoutout to my good friend, Mike Fish.  If you didn’t figure this out, he is the Mystery Man referred to in my little story above.  He currently resides in the Land of Utah with his wife and kids and I’ll bet he is leaving a tip every now and again that makes his food server smile!

Pay it forward, make that guy or gal who just provided you some kind of awesome service a big gratuity.  Opportunities abound!

F-bombs aflyin’!

F-Bombing

First, ladies, PLEASE, watch your mouth!

Am I so out of touch or gotten so old that listening to gals dropping F-bombs in a conversation bothers me?  This morning I sat down at a table in the cafeteria for a little breakfast somethingorother and was sadly within earshot of two gals talking about how some dude did this gal wrong, and she dropped F-bomb after F-bomb describing it to her friend.  It was amazing how prolific she was with this particular word and how useful it was in her discussion.  Amazing.  Note to self: F%#@ should NOT be used in public.

Oh, and while on the topic, guys, this is for you too.  There are loads of people that just don’t like hearing that word, even if used in a sentence!

Conversation Fillers

And second, are you familiar with Conversation Fillers?  These are words coming out of your mouth that give your brain a pause so you can think about what to say or how to say it.  Do you use them?  Here’s my least favorite: “you know”.  And here’s the thing about that one, it makes MY brain pause to NOT think about what you are saying!  Instead of listening to you say “you know” for the 27th time, I am off in the Land of Dave thinking “no, I don’t know but I’ll sit here and listen to you tell me about it.”  And, you know, after a while, I don’t really enjoy the conversation.  You know?

I mean really, it’s not that I think that you should sit around and think about what you’re going to say and when you’re going to say it, I think that you should think before you speak. Get your thoughts in order THEN speak.  You should be aware of what is coming out of your mouth and know if it’s intelligent, if it SOUNDS intelligent or not; and heck, if it’s not intelligent, stop talking! Sometimes I listen to people speak and they will get out 4 or 5 “you knows” in less than a minute, and it’s starting to drive me a little nuts.

Today feels like Monday.  Ugh.

Moving on…..

Hard Work = Positive Results

Let’s see, where to begin….

Back story

For those of you following along in your hymnals, skip down to the next major topic, you’ve already read my previous posts and know a thing or two about my life.  For those of you who haven’t been tracking my plight, I’ll give you the Reader’s Digest version and you can consider yourself up-to-date.  Here goes:

I had cancer.  It should be all gone now, but that always seems to be a hopeful statement not based on data.  The doctors have very specific tests they can run for very specific illnesses, but really, you never know until the wheels begin to fall off your cart.  My cancer was apparently contained within the prostate gland.  Dr. Chan removed it, so my body should be cancer free.  Certainly Prostate Cancer free, right?  Oh sure, they suck blood out of my arm every 3 months, test it and tell me the PSA numbers indicate I don’t have Prostate Cancer anymore, but really who knows what surprises await inside our bodies?  I could (heck, we all could) have skin cancer or some unknown tumor growing somewhere, all we can do is work toward good health and live our lives as best we can.

My story goes like this

I ride a road bike.  When I ride my bike, I go to the extreme limits of my capability, no matter the distance.  I ride to work hard, I go up hills until my legs are burning, I ride fast when the road is flat or tilts favorably down.  And this is not by design.  I don’t get on my bike and think about going hard or going fast.  I just love to go fast!  Must be remnants of the Adrenaline Junkie I was back in my 20’s.  Have you ever heard the comment “rode hard, put away wet”?  That’s me after a ride.  I ride hard, sweat like a race horse, and revel in the after-glow of a job well done.  Perhaps it is sheer exhaustion, but it feels the same as great!

Back in 2010 I was happily riding all over the place.  In October I did a 103 mile ride beginning in Santa Rosa known as Levi’s Gran Fondo.  The ride challenged its many thousands of cyclists with lots of hills, some very steep, a several mile jaunt down the coastline (on Hiway 1), more hills, all very steep, and a return to Santa Rosa.  103 miles, and I was loving life when I was done…..perhaps because I was done!  Two days later I was peeing blood.  Long story short, I had a too-big-for-the-tube kidney stone.  Surgery was required to remove it and it was finally removed in December.  In March of 2011, because my doc had found my prostate a bit “lumpy”, performed a biopsy.  That test showed the gland was full of cancer.  Ugh!  After much deliberation about existing treatments and procedures, we scheduled a prostatectomy (removal of the prostate).  There are lots of options and this was a big decision but my final thought was “why babysit this problem?  Lets solve it now”.  And we did.

So I was off my bike from mid-March of 2011 to sometime in July of that year.  When I began trying to ride again it was always a short distance, never difficult, and I understandably had lost my drive to go hard.  Winter settled in sometime in December and I gladly put my bike away and went about life doing that thing I do.  January came and it was seriously cold.  February, just like January, was cold too, and I did not miss riding at all.  Sure, I thought about it, but really truly I had no plans to get on that carbon horse I named CashFlow until the weather turned more pleasant in Spring.  Sometime in March (unbeknownst to me) I began working on excuses to NOT ride.

That’s probably enough info to get you caught up, let’s get this story started.

I Fail at Failing

May is Bike Month around here and has been going on in Sacramento since 2007.  Every year I make a pledge at work that I will ride XXX miles.  In the year 2007 I rode 801 miles, 2008 was 751, and 2009 was 733 miles.  I think in 2010 I rode somewhere in the high 600’s and 2011 saw 86 miles recorded in the two and a half weeks because of the little problem I was dealing with.  This year, my pledge is to ride 600 miles and I secretly expect at least 700.  Goals have been set and positive results will occur!

After today’s ride to work, when I was out of my cycling kit and getting ready for work, I realized I had somehow been NOT INTERESTED in riding.  Not the way I used to be anyway.  Oh sure, on the outside I’m all hard core about riding, but in some way, way back inside my brain, I was not buying it.  All that “rode hard, put away wet” and “riding like I stole something” had worked its’ way OUT OF MY mind and had slowly been replaced with thoughts like “you can’t” and “you shouldn’t” and “what if you’re not healthy” and all sorts of other negativity.  But I went hard anyway because I really don’t know how to fail.

As an example of that, here’s a question for you.  You know when you’re not good at something?  You try, fail, and move on?  I mean, it’s not fun being rotten at something!  That’s me and basketball.  I can’t make a shot to save my life!  Maybe I can make a shot since a “miss” is still a shot, but you know what I mean, I can’t make a basket, especially during a game.  Yes, I can play the game of HORSE and yes I can sink a shot (made one from 150′ once.  Threw it like a football.  Resulted in a swish, which was more than awesome!  Ask Brother Don, he’ll tell you the same thing.), but playing a game of basketball with teams and such, all looking to score the ball, well, I am NOT THAT GUY.  To celebrate my inability to play basketball, I joined a team.  And when I was a part of that team I found out I am one heckuva defensive freak!  If you pass me the ball, I get rid of it like it is radioactive hot.  I’m smart like that.  But when YOU get the ball, I cover you like sunshine…I am on you like white on rice….and you will either do something magical or rid yourself of that ball because I will take it away, block it, or make your life miserable until you relieve yourself of this terrible responsibility called “ball control”.  That’s my Method of Operation.  My MO.  And it worked.  I think it proves that hard work can find you a way to be effective.  Being stubborn helps too.

So, you ask “what in the heck does that have to do with riding a bicycle?”  It has EVERYTHING to do with the way I ride a bicycle because it is an example of how hard work can bring success even if you aren’t born with the talent to lead out your team.  My riding style may be likened to brute force tactics.  Keep on my wheel if you can!  I can’t really sprint that well, and I’m just an okay climber, but I stick to the job at hand like a rider possessed.  The word “can’t” does not exist.  I don’t quit.  It is an example of how if and when something isn’t going my way, I pursue it like a rabid dog.  A rabid, salivating, snarling dog.  One that is stalking you and following you and harboring thoughts of domination…until I get it right.  Or learn how to get it done another way.  My way.

SHUT UP LEGS!

And as it turns out, to attain my recent success on the bike, I had to somehow give myself permission to ride hard.  I had to kick the tires and give myself a thorough going over before I could FINALLY accept that I could really push my limits again.  Would my heart be strong enough to beat 160 times a minute?  Would my lungs be good enough to support that effort?  What about my legs?  Sitting around for 9 hours a day at my job has done NOTHING to keep them toned and ready for any action at all.  I also had to accept that as I get older things don’t work the same.  Recovery takes longer, muscle-building takes like FOREVER, and stamina (which was the first to go) only comes after A LOT of hard work.  I had to test how deep I could reach within to do something that was hard, that was hurting me, and was nowhere CLOSE to easy.  And I had to come out of that with a clear idea of how to keep doing this thing that was causing great discomfort.  I had to get used to the fact that the little tiny seat my big fat ass was sitting on would never be comfortable.  How my shoulders would need to once again become accustomed to bending forward and holding up my big helmet-protected head for hours on end.  So I have been working hard and telling all the complaining parts of my body to just SHUT THE HELL UP!  And you know what?  It’s seems to be working.

Permission to succeed

Remember that Bike Month thing I mentioned?  To date I have recorded 564 miles and should be on my way to at least 700 miles before the month of May is finished.  During that time I will also have lost at least 10 pounds and should find my elevated blood pressure (for which I take daily medication) to be closer to normal readings.  I sleep better and more soundly these days, and also have a certain “calm”.  I could call it “complete and total exhaustion at night”, but I choose to name it: calm.

As a Fitness Check, there is a ride I do that is a round trip of 50 miles taking me from home to Folsom Lake.  Before I found out about the cancer I could get this ride complete in right around two and a half hours.  Maybe 2:15 on a good day.  My best effort (just prior to Levi’s Gran Fondo) finished this in two hours, eight minutes.  It is neither flat nor free of traffic.  Leaving the house I navigate through familiar neighborhoods for four miles, then hit the bike trail for the rest of the ride.  To get to the Lake there is a little uphill ramp to crest, and when at the top I take a mandatory break of 5 minutes for water and a little nourishment.  Home is next, and the day begins anew.

So, take a guess at what happened the first time I tried this.  My first “fitness check” saw me “bonk” on the way back!  Completely devoid of food/nourishment AND water, I had to stop riding.  I think I was about 8 miles from home when I called my wife to pick me up.  She is a dream and supports my riding in any way she can, and that day she met the Defeated Me four miles from the end of the ride.  I could go no further and I actually quit the ride early.  Ugh.  It is a horrible memory, and I think about it all the time.  But you know what?  It drives me forward.  Never to happen again, it could also be a testament to how far I will go to get/earn what is rightfully mine….fitness!  So I do the work, expect results, and try to keep a very short leash on these rotten memories.

Hard Work = positive results

I think “hard work garners positive results” is just one of those Life Lessons everyone should know.  Set a goal, work hard to get it done, don’t quit, and good things will happen for you.  Get busy, fail like crazy if you have to, but go out and do it until you get it right!  Until you do it to your own satisfaction and get the job done.  It’s a good thing.  Try it, you’ll like it.

Today’s Ride

So, I told you all that so I could tell you this: today’s ride to work was the best I have felt on the bike since I got back to cycling.  It was fantastic!  The seat caused me no pain at all.  My neck/shoulder area had nothing to say the entire way in.  My legs were silent while I busted a move in my best ITT position for miles 5 thru 7.  The lungs did their job without complaint and the heartbeat usually so loud I cannot ignore was nearly quiet.  Oh, I was working up a lather all right, but the cool 62 degree morning air and the LACK OF WIND (for once…the month of May has been super windy) made for a really nice morning, and I got to say it today: rode hard, put away wet.  Nice.  Permission to succeed?  Granted!

Success is just around the corner, I can FEEL it!  You know what else is just around the corner?  A Fitness Check.  Update to follow.

Peace to all.  Thanks for reading.
