Superbowl 2011 – commercials win!
Yeah, I’ve been a fan of commercials since I can remember. I think it is because (the good ones) they have to make their point within a minute and can come across as little movies. Pepsi has always been a favorite, any Budweiser one showing a Clydesdale is good, and the E*Trade baby cracks me up every time.
In spite of Pepsi, Budweiser, and E*Trade making high marks in this years edition, my favorites for Superbowl XLV (45) featured two car commercials and one for Snickers. Watch them here: http://www.superbowl-commercials.org/
“Baby Vader” is my no-holds-barred knock-down favorite. It features a 6 year old wandering around the house trying to unleash the Power of the Force on household items. No good at the washing machine, unsuccessful with the doll, and an Epic Fail with the family dog. Dad finally drives home (and this is apparently where we are buying a car made by Volkswagen) and parks the car in the driveway. While walking to the house he is practically run over by his son who is anxiously waiting to try using The Force on the car. Next we see Dad and Mom standing at the kitchen counter over-looking the front yard of the house. Dad presses the magic key-fob to remote start the car and the kid is completely taken aback by his incredible – and successful – use of The Force. The moment is fantastic and is must see!
Next up is a car commercial by Chrysler. Dark and edgy, it tells the story of how Detroit is a survivor and is Tough which translates to the cars they build. It ends with Eminem getting out of a car saying “This is the motor city. And this is what we do”. Powerful stuff.
And third on the Dave List was the spot for Snickers. They called it: Logging. I guess the premise here is, loggers are tough, but tough loggers can have tough days. Further, if your tough logger is having one of those tough days, a Snickers bar may be what cures yuh. Well, it got high marks for its use of the always complaining funny-man, Richard Lewis. The award was given by me though for its use of a log nearly taking the head off of Rosanne Barr. I guess it would have received a Dave’s List 2nd place award if they had slipped and actually taken her head off, in real time….and then shared the video with the world in spite of her demise. That would have worked out well for everyone.
Anyway, visit the link above. Some of these commercials did a really good job! I’ll let you know if I purchase that Volkswagen, but I am definitely going for a Snickers bar.
Oh, and the game? Green Bay beat Pittsburgh.
