Windows Phone 7
Here is a video I ran across in my recent travels and thought you might enjoy a little overview of Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7. This was created by a guy with an idea to share. He should win an award or something!

For your entertainment……
Who said you can’t find anything worthwhile on the internet? Not me!
Most of the time I use the ‘net to figure stuff out. How to get somewhere, places to go camping, instructions for assembling something, and what happened at last nights game. News, weather, and sports; that kind of stuff.
If you look around long enough the web will provide some kind of serious humor too. And since I am not a YouTube junkie, and don’t spend time looking around for the funny stuff, I am happily surprised when I find it.
This one found me! It’s origin is unknown and interestingly enough, the file was sent via e-mail by my 80 year old Dad. Proof positive the internet is useful and easy to use.

Camping: Plymouth, CA
and another thing about camping: you go places you might never visit.
In this case, I am referring to Plymouth, CA. It is a small town up the road from SacTown most likely established during the Gold Rush back in the 1800’s. I just looked it up, and here is a good link for more info at Wikipedia. Anyway, they have an RV Park we used as a home base for this our third outing in the new trailer. And this town they call “Plymouth” is a place I would never think to visit.
So we find our itinerary listing Plymouth as our next stop and you know what? It was nice! The RV Park is called “ Far Horizons 49er Village RV Resort” and they have plenty of things to do. Visit their site (opens a new window).
And this time we had some other folks with us. Craig and family, Kent & Wilma and family, Mike B, Ren and I. And Jessie the cat.
#1 Reason to go camping
There are loads of reasons to go camping.
- get out of town
- fresh air
- visit new places
- hook-up with friends
- relax
and I am certain there are more really good reasons to go camping. But do you know what the #1 reason to go camping is? You can get in tight with Mother Nature and have a front row seat to her nightly show!
When you are out of town….camping…..away from the hustle and bustle of your daily grind, and put distance between you and the bright lights of the big city, you get to see some stuff you might otherwise miss. As an example, do you know there are actually stars up in the sky, and you can actually view them with your own eyes? No telescope required! And, do you know those geese you see off in the distance, flying in perfect formation? They hang out at the ponds and lakes just outside of town. Who knew??
You also have the chance to smell things you might know little about. Such as, were you aware there are actually trees that smell really good? They smell similar to that little tree hanging in plastic from the rear-view mirror of your car or truck…..but better! Have you smelled a campfire lately? Fantastic!
And then there is the relaxation part of camping. Just think, you are out of town, hanging with friends, in a new place, enjoying the fresh air, relaxing while the sun busily settles below the horizon off to the West. What a great way to spend a weekend.
Make plans to join in the fun, Mother Nature is calling your name!
Superbowl 2011 – commercials win!
Yeah, I’ve been a fan of commercials since I can remember. I think it is because (the good ones) they have to make their point within a minute and can come across as little movies. Pepsi has always been a favorite, any Budweiser one showing a Clydesdale is good, and the E*Trade baby cracks me up every time.
In spite of Pepsi, Budweiser, and E*Trade making high marks in this years edition, my favorites for Superbowl XLV (45) featured two car commercials and one for Snickers. Watch them here: http://www.superbowl-commercials.org/
“Baby Vader” is my no-holds-barred knock-down favorite. It features a 6 year old wandering around the house trying to unleash the Power of the Force on household items. No good at the washing machine, unsuccessful with the doll, and an Epic Fail with the family dog. Dad finally drives home (and this is apparently where we are buying a car made by Volkswagen) and parks the car in the driveway. While walking to the house he is practically run over by his son who is anxiously waiting to try using The Force on the car. Next we see Dad and Mom standing at the kitchen counter over-looking the front yard of the house. Dad presses the magic key-fob to remote start the car and the kid is completely taken aback by his incredible – and successful – use of The Force. The moment is fantastic and is must see!
Next up is a car commercial by Chrysler. Dark and edgy, it tells the story of how Detroit is a survivor and is Tough which translates to the cars they build. It ends with Eminem getting out of a car saying “This is the motor city. And this is what we do”. Powerful stuff.
And third on the Dave List was the spot for Snickers. They called it: Logging. I guess the premise here is, loggers are tough, but tough loggers can have tough days. Further, if your tough logger is having one of those tough days, a Snickers bar may be what cures yuh. Well, it got high marks for its use of the always complaining funny-man, Richard Lewis. The award was given by me though for its use of a log nearly taking the head off of Rosanne Barr. I guess it would have received a Dave’s List 2nd place award if they had slipped and actually taken her head off, in real time….and then shared the video with the world in spite of her demise. That would have worked out well for everyone.
Anyway, visit the link above. Some of these commercials did a really good job! I’ll let you know if I purchase that Volkswagen, but I am definitely going for a Snickers bar.
Oh, and the game? Green Bay beat Pittsburgh.
Bicycling: first ride
I got in a bike ride over the weekend. Here it is Super Bowl Sunday and my day involved nothing about watching a football game. wow, am I demented or what?!
This is the first time I have been on a bicycle since October 9th of last year when I had a kidney stone. This was a huge ordeal where, after 2 months, I ended up having surgery to have the darn thing removed. Ugh. Learning moment: drink your water. Don’t add protein.
Back to the weekend ride; preparation included installing my new saddle, cleaning the major chunks of goo from the ride last October, and pumping up the tires. After that, it was all about getting my riding gear on and mentally preparing for the upcoming effort. Then, I headed out the door and off to the American River Bike Trail, just 4 miles away from home.
It was a little windy with the gusts kicking up over 20mph, and I resolved to go against the wind early to enjoy the fruits of my labor and an easy return trip home. This ride was only to see what kind of shape I had deteriorated to, not as a normal ride which would tell me how long it took to get from point A to point B and give me an idea of my level of fitness. Good plan? It sure turned out that way!
So off I went; wind in the face, pavement rattling under the wheels, feet spinning wildly, and that familiar feeling of freedom tweaking my emotions. The thousands of bicycle miles I have logged in the recent past help me easily contol my expectations. And since this is the seasons First Ride, I expect to go about 25 miles, experience much discomfort (new seat and unused squishy muscles) and hurt when finished. And by “hurt” I mean the hurt is everywhere. And by “everywhere” I mean deep, inside pain in every muscle group that only goes away with time. And for the record, I was not disappointed in either catagory.
I ended up riding 34 miles and learned a few things:
- the new seat needs to be re-positioned forward about an inch
- my old butt needs about a month of riding before it is going to feel okay after a ride
- I have gotten very good at changing tubes on the rear tire
The first two points were pretty well known. I knew the seat was not perfectly set. I could see it lined up properly and had the correct angle, but sitting on a saddle for a few minutes and actually riding on it is very different. You learn things when you sit for a while, and you know what I learned? Riding a bicycle is hard work and you best get yourself as comfortable as possible! So the seat is going to be tweaked until it is just right, and that might take a few rides to until it is perfect. The part about “my old butt” needing some time in the saddle is pretty much self-explanatory. I’m just lucky to have not gained a bunch of weight while I was off eating and drinking for the past 4 months. So there’s that…..
The bullet point above: “changing tubes on the rear tire” is a bit of a quandry. Going back to the last time I rode the bike it was giving me trouble. During Levi’s Gran Fondo, which is a difficult 103 mile ride put on by road racing superstar Levi Leipheimer, and was the last time I was at a really good fitness level able to enjoy such an event. Anyway, I had two brand new tires on the bike and suffered two rear-wheel flats during the ride….with one of them happening while speeding down an 18% decent to the ocean! Yep, that is a scary time to have a tire go soft and could have caused major damage to me and CashFlow (my bike).
Out on the bike trail having a flat is only “inconvenient”. You don’t really have a problem unless you are in a pace-line with other riders or are pushing the limits of centrifugal force inside a turn. Get a flat during this time and you will find it can really hurt! Other than that, you have to stop, get out of the way, and change a tube. No big deal.
On this little trip to the town of Folsom and back, I had to do this not once, not twice, but thrice (is that how you spell it?). The first tire change came at mile 6.5.
“OK” I thought, “the bike has been sitting, waiting for four months, this is expected.”
The next one happened on the way back somewhere around mile 25. Since I used an old tube from last season I was not surprised. Not happy about it, but not surprised. And I promised myself I would look at what is causing the problem when I get home.
The third malfunction happened at mile 35, and really annoyed me. The ride began sometime around 2:30 and here it was almost 4:30, the sun was going down, and there was about 1 hour of sun remaining in the day. And, there were mosquitoes flying about….and I HATE mosquitoes! Especially early in the season when they can be especially ravenous.
So, flat #3. Clock ticking. Sun going down. Mosquitoes. And I am beat. The ride has given me great pause. Here I am riding at about 17 mph and not feeling particularly well after just 30 miles. I have been feeling “not strong” for about 15 miles. I mean, what kind of shape was I in to enjoy the previous ride? Wow. Anyway, back to this repair. The wheel is off, I am swatting at and/or getting bit by flying adversaries I can pay little attention to, the inside tire has nothing poking inside to cause a flat, and I am only interested in finishing this thing out. Now the new tube is seated, tire is hooked to the inside rim, air is going in, and that all familiar 90 pounds of air is holding the rubber taut once again. The wheel is back on the bike and adjusted to the middle of its track, and off I go down the trail again.
For the record, I did not complete the ride as expected. With the sun casting its yellow/orange hues all around, I used the cell phone to call the wife for a pickup at the park. She complied and I was comfortably inside a car after just 34 miles. Heckuva way to start the season!
The bike is now back in the rack and will receive my full attention before the next ride. Might be a couple of days though….I still hurt!
Paul Newman
Ok, so I went fishing for a new wine tonight. And here’s the driving force behind this purchase…..I like red wine, at a fair price. Merlot is good, Cabernet better. And the richer the better. And I love experimenting with new flavors too. So tonight it was Newman’s Own. The $7.99 purchase was made at Costco, and by golly, it was good!
Try it sometime. Good stuff!

Song In My Brain….
The Song In My Brain this morning was: Kid Rock’s “Born Free”.
For the record, I am not generally a fan of Kid Rock, but I can make an exception here cuz the song ROCKS! Get about a minute into the song and you might find your toe tapping and your brain memorizing some of the lyrics. If you are like me, you might break out your own personal air guitar and begin strumming wildly along with the song. Just be careful to have the music at a level others will hear as they walk by staring at your interpretation of the song…..there is nothing quite like watching someone gyrate to a tune only they can hear. Share the tune….earplugs are not allowed!
IF I DID THIS RIGHT, you should be able to view the YouTube video right here, right now. Enjoy!
The clip is from the CMA Music Festival 2010
